Aʀᴍʏ Servicewoman Rᴇsᴄᴜᴇs Oʟᴅᴇʀ Dog Who Spent Seven Years In A Sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ

Can you imagine being sᴛᴜᴄᴋ in a Sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ for seven years? Just think of the ᴅɪsᴀᴘᴘᴏɪɴᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ watching other dogs being taken to their forever homes, with your own luck never changing. That was Pirate’s story for seven years, as she lived in a Sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ in Oahu, Hᴀᴡᴀɪɪ without ever being chosen to become part of somebody’s family. However, that all changed when Aʀᴍʏ servicewoman Jennifer Hoyt saw something in Pirate and was determined to take her home; Pirate’s story now has a happy ending!

Jennifer Hoyt was recently sᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴᴇᴅ ɪɴ Hᴀᴡᴀɪɪ as a member of the US Aʀᴍʏ and planned to spend some time volunteering at a Sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ. She knew she wanted to adopt a dog but had agreed with her fiancé, Dennis Shaffer, also Aʀᴍʏ, to wait until he arrived several months later. The couple planned to find a house, explore their new surroundings, and adopt a dog once they were fully settled. On her first day at the Sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ, Jennifer noticed Pirate. The pup was older than most of the other dogs and had a sᴀᴅ look on her face. Jennifer was immediately drawn to Pirate and started wondering about her story.

Jennifer looked through Oahu Animal Sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ’s Instagram page and learned that poor Pirate had been in the Sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ for seven years. Just like that, Jennifer knew she had to give this dog a forever home. Jennifer tearfully called Dennis and explained the situation. He said that she should meet the dog. The next day, Jennifer spent time with Pirate in her kennel. Jennifer’s ʜᴇᴀʀᴛ ʙʀᴏᴋᴇ when she saw how sᴀᴅ the dog was.

“She didn’t look at me; she didn’t look at anything,” Jennifer told I Heart Dogs. “She was emotionally detached. That ʙʀᴏᴋᴇ ᴍʏ ʜᴇᴀʀᴛ.” She had been in an animal Sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ ɪɴ Hᴀᴡᴀɪɪ for so long that she’d become ᴇᴍᴏᴛɪᴏɴᴀʟʟʏ ᴜɴᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄʜᴇᴅ. Her little heart had been ʙʀᴏᴋᴇɴ repeatedly; in a very human manner, she’d learned to tune out the world around her, to prevent further ᴅɪsᴀᴘᴘᴏɪɴᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ.

Jennifer bought Pirate new toys and a new bed, and the dog gratefully curled up on the bed. Slowly but surely, the dog began warming up to Jennifer. After hearing her story, Dennis said that Jennifer should adopt Pirate—he could tell that he would love her too. Jennifer started visiting Pirate in her kennel nearly every day, sometimes spending up to eight hours by her new friend’s side. Her heart just couldn’t stand being away from her and ɢᴜɪʟᴛ ᴄᴏɴsᴜᴍᴇᴅ her when she went out to have fun with friends, knowing Pirate was ʟᴏɴᴇʟʏ and sᴀᴅ without her.As the bond between the two grew, Jennifer knew she would eventually adopt Pirate. Jennifer got things in order and brought her home to her forever family on July 13, 2017. Naturally, it took some time for the family of three to work out how to live in harmony after Pirate spent half of her life living in a ᴄᴏʟᴅ, hard kennel. Pirate was very closely bonded to Jennifer and seemed a bit ᴛʜʀᴇᴀᴛᴇɴᴇᴅ by Dennis’s arrival on the scene. Patience, love, and persistence paid off and Pirate came around, loving Dennis with all of her puppy heart.

Pirate now goes by Pirate Marie and if her Instagram account is any indication, she is living the high life with her beloved people. Jennifer and Dennis love having Pirate Marie around and look forward to spending every single day of her new life as a family. We wish all Sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ dogs had such happy endings. Unfortunately, it’s not easy for a dog to find a forever home. We encourage you to consider adoption because owning a pet can bring joy to your life; a dog will become the energy of your house, a faithful friend, and a loving protector.
