We’ve always admired those people who work to help animals in need. And when we hear the story of Jacks Anderson and her wife ʀᴇsᴄᴜɪɴɢ a pregnant street dog, we can say nothing but hundred thanks to them.
One day, Jacks Anderson and his wife stopped for lunch at a fried chicken stand when she noticed they had an audience. A large black pittie named Poppy lay on the sidewalk under the barstools at the counter, watching them eat.
“She never took her eyes off of us, but she didn’t come close or beg for food,” Anderson said. “The owners of the stand came out and shooed her away down the sidewalk. It was obvious she was sᴄᴀʀᴇᴅ, and she ᴅɪsᴀᴘᴘᴇᴀʀᴇᴅ.”
After lunch, the couple spotted the dog again on their drive home. This time, the couple was able to see her large, pregnant belly, and they knew they couldn’t leave the dog and her babies to sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴇ alone in such a ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜs environment.
To win the dog’s trust, Anderson’s wife put the leftovers in a bowl and handed them over to the dog. Anderson said. “She was very skittish, but we could see some of the scars that she has, so I understood why she didn’t want to risk it.”
Finally, the young couple gained the dog’s trust and carried it into the car. Poppy also seemed to feel safer and more comfortable.
“We just kind of paused at that moment to allow Poppy to calm a bit, but honestly, she was far more calm than I anticipated,” Anderson said. “I started to record the video of my wife comforting her, and I realized that Poppy had tears coming from her eyes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in a dog, and it definitely made an impact.”
Poppy has fleas and worms. She received medical treatment and is now in Anderson’s care.
“Poppy spent her first couple of days with us just one on one,” Anderson added. “She slept nearly all the time and acclimated to the couch pretty quickly. In the last day or two, she’s become far more active, showing interest in the other dogs and following me around instead of sleeping.”
Anderson says that Poppy is a sweet dog who loves to be cuddled and pampered. She also gets along with the couple’s other lifeguards. Poppy has finally found her loving home. Her children will be cared for until they are old enough to be adopted into the house forever.
