With the raging bushfires across Australia, sᴀᴅ and ʜᴏʀʀɪꜰʏɪɴɢ news seems to be constantly streaming from the south pacific country. But one story was warming hearts, and showing the power of kindness during this ᴛʀᴀɢɪᴄ 2019-2020 fire season. A gallant golden retriever, proudly owned by Kerry McKinnon, is being hailed a hero for Sᴀᴠɪɴɢ an orphaned baby koala.
Kerry McKinnon enjoyed her life with her Golden retriever, Asha. But one morning, a surprise waited for her. Her husband yelled her to come, and when she went outside, Asha was sitting with a baby koala atop her back. It is likely that the innocent koala had fallen out of it’s mother’s pouch during the night, prompting it to wander onto Kerry’s back porch, finding warmth and comfort in Asha’s golden fur.
The golden seemed perfectly content to have the koala baby snuggling on her back and was not worried about it at all, according to Kerry. “She kept looking back at the koala but she wasn’t trying to get him off her or anything. She was happy to let him snuggle into her,” Kerry said. Asha obviously nominated herself as protector of the baby. Koala babies can’t sᴜʀᴠɪᴠᴇ alone for very long, so it was wonderful that Asha ʀᴇsᴄᴜᴇᴅ the tiny creature from becoming a meal for a fox or other ᴘʀᴇᴅᴀᴛᴏʀ or sᴛᴀʀᴠɪɴɢ to ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜ.
Kerry said it ‘wasn’t easy’ trying to separate the two – with the koala putting up a ‘huge fuss’ when she tried to remove it from Asha’s back. She added the little koala is doing well after being checked out by a vet – and is now being looked after by a local koala carer until it can be released back into the wild. The golden retriever’s heroic feat has since gone viral on social media, with the adorable photos of the unlikely duo racking up hundreds of likes and shares online.
