It’s truly ᴀᴍᴀᴢɪɴɢ what ᴡɪʟᴅ ᴘʟᴏᴛ twists life has in store when you’re looking the other way. Just when you think it’s over, and you’re left questioning, “Is this really all there is?,” or feel like there’s nothing else and you’re ready to let go and say, “Goodbye ᴄʀᴜᴇʟ world,” you’re presented with a second chance. it’s a new lease on life that you never saw coming, a new chapter you couldn’t imagine in your ᴡɪʟᴅᴇsᴛ dreams!

That’s what happened to this pup, a Labrador who was a rescue dog and was counting down his ꜰɪɴᴀʟ ᴅᴀʏs until euthanization. In his ᴅᴀʀᴋᴇsᴛ hour, just when he thought this was it, something else fell into place and completely changed his life.

Benny was a puppy when he was adopted by Cheryl Del Sangro, a former skating coach who fell in love with him. “He had spent six months in a ᴋɪʟʟ sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ in Uᴛᴀʜ and eventually was put on the euthanasia list,” she said. “A local Lᴀs Vᴇɢᴀs rescue had pulled him on his last day and transported him to Lᴀs Vᴇɢᴀs, but nobody had put in to adopt him. But, as soon as I saw his eyes in the photo, I knew he was meant for me. I filled out the forms, finally got to meet him and it was instant love.”

Cheryl Del Sangro took him to a rink last year to practice and noticed that he enjoys walking around the ice and is excited to pick up the bags and says she was inspired and decided to go. train him.

Benny loved his time at the centre. He scrambled around the ice, picking up ᴘᴜᴄᴋs, then a stick.

“That’s when it clicked for me that I could teach him how to skate on actual ice skates,” Del Sangro says. “If I could teach our daughter to skate back in Cleveland at the age of 17 ᴍᴏɴᴛʜs ᴏʟᴅ, I could teach Benny to skate.” Del Sangro made a pair of skates with the help of a local shoemaker, and a dog-boot company out of Canada. Benny wears the skates only on his front paws; the back paws provide traction.

“He was very comfortable and immediately started to skate. I corrected his feet positions a few times and he was off on his own,” Del Sangro says. “We were completely ᴀsᴛᴏᴜɴᴅᴇᴅ.” The next step is for Benny ‘the Skating dog’ to perform as part of the Lᴀs Vᴇɢᴀs Golden Knights’ professional ice hockey team’s on-ice entertainment line-up. Del Sangro says, “I do not want any money from this. I just want everyone to see what I’ve seen, that this is just so amazing. I’ve never seen it before.”
