Dog celebrates 20th birthday and becomes the oldest golden retriever in history

One of the sᴀᴅ things about loving a dog is that their life expectancy is so much sʜᴏʀᴛᴇʀ ᴛʜᴀɴ that of humans. They live about 12-14 years on average, so you need to make their time here special.
But some lucky dogs get to ʟɪᴠᴇ ʟᴏɴɢᴇʀ ᴛʜᴀɴ others… like one golden retriever named August, who just celebrated her ᴍɪʀᴀᴄᴜʟᴏᴜs 20th birthday.
And what makes it even more ɪɴᴄʀᴇᴅɪʙʟᴇ is that it makes her the oldest golden retriever in history, according to Golden Hearts.August, also known as Augie, was born April 24, 2000. The dog had a rough start to life: she had to be rehomed twice, and didn’t find her “forever home” until she was 14 ʏᴇᴀʀs ᴏʟᴅ, when she was adopted by Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt of Oᴀᴋʟᴀɴᴅ, Tᴇɴɴᴇssᴇᴇ and thanks to their care, has managed to ʟɪᴠᴇ ᴛᴡɪᴄᴇ ᴀs ʟᴏɴɢ ᴀs most dogs of her kind.
To celebrate her milestone birthday, Augie earned a dog-friendly carrot cake, as well as some quality time with her fellow golden retriever siblings, Sherman, Belle, and Bruce.

And even at 20 years old, Augie is surprisingly healthy, her owner Jennifer said.
“She can still move around well (although she’s a bit shaky when she first gets up) and enjoys daily walks around the yard,” Jennifer told the rescue. “Since she was diagnosed with some kidney issues when she was 14, she now eats a mixture of wet and dry Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d, and takes some supplements for her kidneys and joints.”

“She’s just darling. There’s nothing to not love about her,” Jennifer Hetterscheidt said. “She’s happy doing something and happy doing nothing.”
“I can’t imagine life without her,” she added. While Augie was already a senior dog when she was adopted, that didn’t stop her and her family from taking road trips across the country and spending entire summers at the pool.
Today, Augie is slower and a bit more wobbly.

“She’ll stumble now and then but as long as she can get a grip where she is, she can get up,” Jennifer Hetterscheidt said. “Even though she’s easy to care for, we watch her like a hawk every moment that we’re awake.”

It’s unknown how much longer Augie has to live, but Jennifer Hetterscheidt said they’re already looking forward to her 21st birthday.

Little did Augie know, she was actually making history: by passing 20, she became the oldest golden retriever in history! Nearly doubling the normal lifespan of a golden retriever, this dog is a true inspiration.

Happy birthday, Augie! Congrats on your record-setting achievement, and here’s to many more!
