Aʙᴀɴᴅᴏɴᴇᴅ Dog Found with ‘Free’ and ‘Good Home Only’ Written On Body

An adorable Aʙᴀɴᴅᴏɴᴇᴅ dog was sᴘᴏᴛᴛᴇᴅ roaming a park in southern Oʜɪᴏ with permanent marker sᴘʟᴀᴛᴛᴇʀᴇᴅ across her body. Tʜᴇ Hᴜᴍᴀɴᴇ Sᴏᴄɪᴇᴛʏ Aɴɪᴍᴀʟ Sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ in Cʜɪʟʟɪᴄᴏᴛʜᴇ took in the white lab mix, who was found with words ‘FREE’ as well as ‘Good Home Only’ and ‘I am a gift from Gᴏᴅ’ written on her.

According to Sarah Cantrell, office manager and adoption coordinator at the Ross County Humane Society in Cʜɪʟʟɪᴄᴏᴛʜᴇ, Ohio, the Lab-mix puppy was ᴅᴜᴍᴘᴇᴅ in Yoctangee Park ahead of the Feast of the Flowering Moon Festival, which takes place during Memorial Day weekend. The dog’s owner has been ᴄʜᴀʀɢᴇᴅ with ᴄʀᴜᴇʟᴛʏ to ᴀɴɪᴍᴀʟs, ᴀʙᴀɴᴅᴏɴᴍᴇɴᴛ and failure to ʟɪᴄᴇɴsᴇ.

“We were all kind of sʜᴏᴄᴋᴇᴅ,” Cantrell told about seeing the puppy with messages inked on its coat. “It just seems like a childish thing to do.” The Ross County Humane Society takes in approximately 1,200 dogs per year and charges a $50 “surrender fee” to offset its costs in caring for the unwanted ᴀɴɪᴍᴀʟs. Cantrell says the pet owner was told by her landlord that she couldn’t keep the dog. But she stresses there are other avenues to explore if a person cannot keep a dog, including finding a ʀᴇsᴄᴜᴇ or approaching her organization with the specific situation.

“We will work with people,” she said. Marvella’s situation was surprising even to a staff accustomed to dealing with cases of ᴀʙᴜsᴇ and ɴᴇɢʟᴇᴄᴛ.Ross County Humane SocietyThankfully, the dog, who has since been named Marvella (meaning ᴍɪʀᴀᴄʟᴇ), is faring well. “She’s healthy and sweet and thankfully did not suffer from heat exposure,” said Cantrell. Many dogs that are ᴅᴜᴍᴘᴇᴅ do not survive or even make it to a sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ. The dog now named Marvella is now being cared for at the sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀ and is available for adoption.Good news update – June 2, 2018: Not only have Ross County authorities identified and ᴄʜᴀʀɢᴇᴅ the person they say is responsible for abandoning Marvella, Marvella has also found a forever home. Kendra Stafford faces ᴄʜᴀʀɢᴇs ᴏꜰ ᴀɴɪᴍᴀʟ ᴄʀᴜᴇʟᴛʏ and ᴀɴɪᴍᴀʟ ᴀʙᴀɴᴅᴏɴᴍᴇɴᴛ and is scheduled to appear in ᴄᴏᴜʀᴛ. As for Marvella, shortly after her ʀᴇsᴄᴜᴇ, the sweet Lab mix was adopted. The Ross County Humane Society is hoping that Marvella’s story will inspire others to support their local ᴀɴɪᴍᴀʟ sʜᴇʟᴛᴇʀs.
